Online Therapy in the UK: Does It Really Work?

Online therapy has become an increasingly popular way to access counselling and psychotherapy across the UK. Whether you're looking for support with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or trauma, online sessions offer a flexible and effective alternative to face-to-face therapy.

If you're wondering whether online therapy really works, the short answer is: yes.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Research shows that online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for many common mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. Clients report similar levels of satisfaction and meaningful change.

What matters most in therapy is not the setting, but the relationship.

The connection between you and your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of a positive outcome. This kind of therapeutic relationship can be built online in a way that feels genuine, supportive, and deeply attuned.

Why more people in the UK are choosing online therapy

Many people delay seeking therapy, not because they don’t want support, but because something gets in the way.

This might include:

  • long waiting lists

  • difficulty finding the right therapist locally

  • busy or unpredictable schedules

  • anxiety about attending sessions in person

  • wanting more privacy

Online therapy helps to remove these barriers, making it easier to access support when you need it.

You can attend sessions from anywhere in the UK, without the need to travel, and with more flexibility around your time.

The benefits of online counselling

Online therapy offers both practical and emotional benefits:

Flexibility
Sessions can fit around your work, family, and daily life.

Comfort
Being in your own space can help you feel more at ease, particularly at the beginning.

Accessibility
You’re not limited to therapists in your local area, you can find someone who feels like the right fit.

Continuity
It’s often easier to maintain regular sessions, which supports deeper therapeutic work.

What can online therapy help with?

Online therapy can support a wide range of emotional and psychological experiences, including:

  • Anxiety and overwhelm

  • Depression and low mood

  • Relationship and couples difficulties

  • Trauma and past experiences

  • Low self-esteem

  • Bereavement and loss

  • Identity and life transitions

Relational approaches, including person-centred, psychodynamic, Gestalt, and integrative therapies, can all be offered effectively online.

Is online therapy right for you?

Beginning therapy can feel like a big step.

For many people, online therapy offers a gentler starting point. You don’t need to travel or enter an unfamiliar environment. Instead, you can begin from a place that already feels private and known to you.

This can make it easier to speak openly and begin exploring what’s going on for you.

My approach to online therapy

I work relationally, which means I focus on building a genuine, supportive relationship with you.

I draw on approaches including person-centred, Gestalt, and psychodynamic therapy, adapting the work to suit you as an individual. My aim is to offer a space where you feel heard, understood, and able to explore your experience at your own pace.

Online therapy doesn’t take away from this process, in many cases, it allows people to feel more comfortable and more themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Therapy

Is online therapy effective?

Yes. Research shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for many issues, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. The most important factor is the relationship between you and your therapist, which can be built just as strongly online.

Is online therapy confidential?

Online therapy is confidential, just like in-person therapy. I use secure platforms and work in line with professional ethical guidelines to ensure your privacy is protected.

Can I do therapy online from anywhere in the UK?

Yes. One of the benefits of online therapy is that you can access support wherever you are in the UK, without being limited by location.

What do I need for online therapy?

You’ll need:

  • a private space where you feel comfortable

  • a stable internet connection

  • a phone, tablet, or computer with video

Is online therapy suitable for anxiety or depression?

Yes. Many people seek online therapy for anxiety, depression, and stress, and find it highly effective. Being in your own space can sometimes make it easier to open up.

Can couples therapy be done online?

Yes. Online couples therapy can be very effective and offers flexibility for both partners, especially if you have different schedules or locations.

Do you work in-person or just online?

I provide in-person counselling and supervision in the BA6 area of Somerset, as well as online therapy for clients throughout the UK.

How do we start?

We begin with an initial conversation. This is a space for us to get a sense of each other and to see how it feels to talk together. We can also go through any practical details, such as session times and how online sessions will work.

From there, I’ll invite you to share what has brought you to therapy at this point in your life. This isn’t a formal assessment, but an opportunity to begin understanding your experience and what you might want from the work.

Together, we’ll gently shape a focus for our sessions and agree how we might work going forward. This includes talking about the frequency of sessions and whether we’re working in an open-ended way or for an agreed period of time.

This process isn’t fixed. Therapy can evolve, and we can return to these conversations at any point to reflect on what feels helpful and what might need to shift.
